The Order of the Thistle represents the highest honour in Scotland. It is second only in precedence in the UK to the Order of the Garter. Even though the date of the foundation of the Order is not known it seems that  the Order may have been founded by James III who changes the Royal symbolism in Scotland, adopting the thistle as the Royal plant badge.
The Order counts just 12 knights honours Scottish men and women who have held public office or who have contributed in a particular way to national life.

Kate and William in Scotland are not known as the duke and duchess of Cambridge but as count and Countess of Strathearn as made clear by the tartan Strathearn scarf that the duchess wore for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on River Thames and brought today too (Thanks Charlotte and Anna for the info)
